Physical storyteller David Neufeld presents, “Watch the Unraveling: Stories and Theater of Many Styles and Cultures,” at Flood Gallery, 109 Roberts St., Asheville, 7 p.m., April 11. A Virginia festival organizer called Neufeld of Maine “a cross between Mark Twain and Gary Larson.” Neufeld has staged more than two thousand performances world-wide over the past thirty years. The performance at Flood Gallery will feature: a “love triumphs” trumping of Punch and Judy farces; the absurdist monologue of a dying mosquito; a lifeguard hero story conveyed through illusion; an adaptation of the Inuit tale, “Skeleton Woman”; and a many-creatured hand shadow animation of a Sioux folktale. Portland, Maine’s “Casco Bay Weekly” describes Neufeld as “a cinematic synthesis of mime, theater, and stand-up comedy that is both arresting and fun to watch.” Michael Parent, international storytelling star, says Neufeld “combines superb technical skill with a solid, magnetic, and accessible stage presence.” David Neufeld has performed in eight countries and most of the U.S. As founder and director of The New England Modern Storytelling Festival, he brought together other nationally known figures on a stage dedicated to cutting-edge storytelling. There is a $10 cover charge for the event. Call 712-9140 or visit www.floodgallery.org.
