Simplicity can often be the most difficult thing for an artist to achieve. There's always the temptation to take something a step further, add a little more this, a little more that. Suddenly, it's a step too far. In her functional and decorative ceramics, Asheville ceramic artist Heather Knight displays a mastery of the art of aesthetic restraint, achieving dramatic impact with a careful, simple balance of the elements.

Call For Artists!

Mountain Housing Opportunities (MHO) invites artists to participate in the Seventh Annual Doors of Asheville Auction—an opportunity for artists to stretch their boundaries and create artwork to help MHO open doors to affordable homeownership and strengthen our community. This year’s Doors of Asheville is a juried event and your artwork must fall into the description listed below. The artist application deadline is Tuesday, July 6th. Chosen artists will be notified by July 20th. If chosen, your artwork will need to be submitted by September 20th. The Doors of Asheville event will take place on Friday, November 5, at The Venue in Asheville.

Twenty-five artists will be selected by a jury of art professionals. On the Verge was a great success!

On the Verge is still Showing in the Phil Mechanic Studios

A seasoned potter who’s taking her ceramics down a fresh path. A kinetic sculptor who’s just opened his own gallery. A glass artist who’s exploring his own style after year’s spent working behind the scenes. A painter inspired through meditation. These are just a few of the talented and intriguing winners in On the Verge, our second annual competition for emerging visual artists.
Three jurors from around the country—all experts in the visual arts who specialize in discovering, mentoring, and promoting emerging talent—selected nine finalists. And our readers voted online to nominate the tenth.
This year, WNC magazine collaborated with Flood Gallery Fine Art Center to welcome these artists to the spotlight by hosting a month-long group exhibit. Get to know the artists within these pages, but don’t miss the opportunity to see their works this June.
