Foreign Film Friday: “Another Round”

(2020, 2h, Denmark, Comedy by Thomas Vinterberg)

1 Oscar, 60 wins. Four high school teachers experiment with maintaining a constant blood alcohol level to cure their midlife burnout, with initially euphoric but ultimately dark results. Director Thomas Vinterberg uses a naturalistic, handheld cinematography style with realistic lighting that shifts from static and drab to kinetic and chaotic. This documentary-like approach perfectly mirrors the characters’ state of mind, capturing both the highs of intoxication and the bleak reality of addiction. Starring Mads Mikkelsen.

Foreign Film Friday: “Poor Things”

(2023, 2h 21m, Ireland, UK, Hungary US, Fantasy/Comedy by Yorgos Lanthimos). 4 Oscars, 112 wins. Yorgos Lanthimos delivers a breathtakingly surreal and visually opulent dark comedy that reimagines the Frankenstein myth through a kaleidoscopic, steampunk lens. This visually stunning odyssey follows Bella Baxter, a reanimated woman with a child’s brain, as she breaks free from Victorian constraints to embark on a hedonistic, hyper-stylized journey of absolute self-discovery and liberation. Based on the 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray. Starring Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo.
