Flutist Emily Hay’s performances blend unconventional sounds, classic instruments, & vocals into unpredictable sonic landscapes. Mongo Sondo creates experimental music with rewired/self-built/repurposed instruments, toys and gadgets, while Counterfeit Circus weaves together film, spoken word poetry, & storytelling with an array of synthesizers and unusual instruments.
More about Emily Hay:
Emily Hay is a flutist (C flute, alto flute, bass flute and piccolo) and a vocalist (soprano and extended techniques) whose musical language reaches beyond the traditional roles and capabilities of her instruments by combining the complexity of contemporary electronics with the spontaneity of free improvisation. The result is startling interpretations of sound and intense ensemble interaction. Her vibrant musical explorations embody unusual tone colors and soaring rhythmic structures, often augmented by electronically generated effects and overlapped by unusual vocalizations ranging from the primal to operatic, exploding with humorous stories, disturbing lyrics, harsh vamps and shocking noises that arise from the stream of consciousness.
Recently relocated from So. California to the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina (USA), Hay remains an active member of the ‘experimental left’ music communities and has performed in avant garde, art rock, free improvisation, electro-acoustical and contemporary ensembles such as HayFever, Polarity Taskmasters, U Totem, The Motor Totemist Guild, The 5 UU’s , Otherparts, I Am Umbrella, Adam Rudolph’s Go Organic Orchestra, The Emily Hay Collective, The Rich West Ensemble, The Jeff Kaiser Okodektet and The Vinny Golia Large Ensemble. Recordings of her work have been released independently as well as by Cuneiform Records, Recommended Records, Nine Winds, Meta, pfMentum, Public Eyesore and Dragnet Records. She has toured and performed extensively with concert highlights at the Bimhuis/Amsterdam, the Stone/NYC, the Ottomat/Italy, Rhizome/Washington D.C., New Music America Festival/Montreal, Timucua Arts Foundation/Orlando, Art Rock Festival/Frankfurt, Open Gate Music Series/Los Angeles, Static Age Records/Asheville, Kulturni Dom/Yugoslavia, the Pilot Light/Knoxville, TN, Staion de Art Sankt Peter/Cologne, Germany, Art Rat Studio/Roanoke and the Reithalle/Switzerland.
Emily Hay co-hosted the radio show, “Trilogy”, on KXLU 88.9FM Los Angeles (and at [http://www.kxlu.com)]www.kxlu.com) for decades, producing live performances and guest interviews by musicians and composers of the avant-garde, free jazz, improvisation, contemporary classical, experimental and electronic music genres. Formerly the Music Director for the Beyond Baroque Foundation in Venice, CA, Hay curated and promoted live experimental music events in Los Angeles by a stream of renowned performers such as Fred Frith, Tom Cora, John Adams and David Moss.
Counterfeit Circus / Carlos Steward
Carlos Steward, along with dozens of musicians and pantomime performers, founded the Counterfeit Circus in 1972 in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, as a way to raise funds to feed orphans. Known for its quirky blend of electronic and experimental theatre, the group has performed across Latin America. Today, Carlos brings that same spirit to his performances, weaving together film, spoken word poetry, and storytelling with an array of synthesizers and unusual instruments—channeling the energy of his traveling circus.
Zen Sutherland / Mongo Sondo
Zen Sutherland is a well-loved, cult-figure artist in Asheville known for creating experimental music with self-built instruments made from toys and repurposed gadgets and electronics. His multidisciplinary work blends improvised sound, spoken word, and visual art in a playful, handcrafted but edgy style.

Foreign Film Friday: “Heart of Glass” by Herzog
(1976, 1h 34m, West Germany, Drama/Experimental by Werner Herzog)
In an 18th century Bavarian village, which relies on a blown glass factory, the master craftsman dies taking the secret of the famous red glass with him. The community is shocked all over, from the unstable aristocracy to the proletarian drunkards. An oracle foretells the slew of troubles time will bring. Every actor in every scene performed while hypnotized, with the exception of the oracle character Hias and the professional glassblowers who appear in the film. Herzog intended the strange performances to suggest the trance-like state of the obsessed townspeople in the story.

“Where the Green Ants Dream” (1984, 1h 40m, West Germany/Australia, by Werner Herzog)
A surveying team led by Australian geologist Lance Hackett (Bruce Spence) is setting off subterranean explosions deep in the outback, searching for possible uranium mining sites. Hackett’s work is interrupted by Aboriginals Miliritbi (Wandjuk Marika) and Dayipu (Roy Marika), who claim that green ants dream underneath this land, and, if the insects’ slumbers are interrupted, the world will come to an end. The dispute between the two sides becomes both a court case and a philosophical debate.

In Prague, Kopfrkingl (Rudolf Hrusínský) enjoys his work at the crematorium perhaps a bit too much, having gained a perverse idea of reincarnation from his haphazard studies of Tibet. After World War II breaks out, there is a sudden need to be as Aryan as possible, and Kopfrkingl’s old friend Reinke (Ilja Prachar) points out that Kopfrkingl has some German heritage. But his wife is Jewish, which makes his children Jewish, which makes the now-Nazi Kopfrkingl’s blood boil.

In this unconventional French film, renowned writer/philosopher Henri Laborit (portraying himself) presents three stories that illustrate the complexities of human behavior. René (Gérard Depardieu) is a man from humble farming roots who becomes manager at a textile factory and must contend with the pressures of the job. Meanwhile, Janine (Nicole Garcia), an actress turned stylist, is involved in an affair with Jean (Roger Pierre), a politician and aspiring writer who faces difficulties at home.
